News & Updates

2021.09

A warm welcome to @forsyth_leila joining the lab in the dual role of lab manager and post-doc. We will collaborate with Dr. Aubin at Natural Resources Canada to look at the effects of intraspecific covariance on tree response to climate gradients.

2021.05

Natalie and Christina graduated from U. Waterloo with their BSc. Both proud of them for that accomplishment and sad to see them go. Best of success to Christina with her MSc in the Castroverde lab, and to Natalie who is shopping for the right MSc.

2020.04

Congratulations to Lina for receiving the E.B. Dumbroff Award in plant science! Well deserved!

2020.03

Christina won 2nd place for best poster at the UW Women In Science Symposium. Congratulations Christina! Natalie is getting started on pilot projects with Arabidopsis. It’s so exciting to get our hands onto plants again!

2020.01

Happy New Year and New Decade! 2020 is starting with a bang! A warm welcome to Lina Aragon, starting her PhD in the Messier lab. Also excited to have presented my research at Wilfred Laurier (01.10) and University of Guelph (01.16). It was wonderful to finally meet my fellow Ecology colleagues and neighbors.

2019.10.11

Great time at U.Maine visiting former PhD advisor Brian McGill and presenting my work to the School of Biology and Ecology. It’s nice when a PI studying animal metabolism says they can relate to your findings on plant traits!

2019.07.29

I am thrilled to announce that@linamaragon has accepted an offer to join my lab as a PhD student@WaterlooBio. She brings experience in ecophys, stats, publishing & field work, passion & a positive can-do attitude. We will do great work AND have fun doing it! Can’t wait!

2019.04.09

I was honored to present my research at the Centre d’Étude de la Forêt at the Université du Québec à Montréal. I did my BSc at UQÀM, so it was meaningful to now come back as a prof. Thanks UQÀM and Dan Kneeshaw for setting me up for success on this path.

2018.12.01

Our paper, led by Bob Muscarella, is out in Ecology: “Effects of biotic interactions on tropical tree performance depend on abiotic conditions” – doi: 10.1002/ecy.2537

2018.11.01

Thrilled to start as an Assistant Professor in the Biology department of the University of Waterloo (Ontario, Canada). First day of the rest of my life!

2018.09.20

Our new paper is out in AJB!We find that the intraspecific integration patterns of 24 coexisting temperate tree species are very different from each other (and we don’t know why) – except for a consistent relationships between LMA and WUE. DOI: 10.1002/ajb2.1146

2018.07.22

Having a wonderful time with colleagues at the GRS & GRC on Unifying Ecology Across Scales. So much cutting-edge and inspiring research at the interface of disciplines happening !

2018.04.27

Finished measuring maximum photosynthetic rate on 308 Arabidopsis plants with a LiCor6400! Glad it is done, and excited to look at the data.

2018.01.05

I am in Montpellier until June to run an experiment with Cyrille Violle and François Vasseur.

2017.12.01

In Montreal to give a seminar at the Institue de Recherche en Biologie Végétale.

2017.11.09

In Ontario to present my research at the University of Waterloo (Ontario).

2017.11.07

Our paper “Trait covariance: the functional warp of plant diversity?” summarizing the 39th New Phytologist symposium on trait covariation is out.  DOI:10.1111/nph.14853

2017.10.20

Our proposal to Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution for a special issue on Unifying Ecology Across Scales has been accepted. Drs Barneche, O’Connor, Gonzalez and I will co-edit the issue.

2017.08.25

Journal of Ecology published a video-blog on a paper I just published where I examine trait networks.

2017.08.16

I gave a short talk on my research at the INTECOL Future Perspectives Webinar. Link available soon.
